Step 1: Why do I want to write?

Why do I want to write? Writing helps me express myself. My thoughts, my emotions, my beliefs. But not just that. Writing goes beyond to show what we want to communicate, share with the rest of the people. And share useful information that could be useful to people’s lives.

Step 2: 5 senses imagery writing

I took on a walk with my mom yesterday to the park near by our house in our neighborhood. We took our dog, Mocha with us on the car and we headed out to the park we go to every afternoon to walk our dog. They say walking helps you organize your thoughts and is a useful recreational activity. There are couples in the park, family walking together, people jogging with beads of sweat rolling down their face. There are colorful shades of leaves in the park arranged by people with newly grown and planted plants. Some people are sitting near the gate talking to one another. The gate closes at 7pm and hence we have about an hour to take a stroll around the park several laps. As breeze passes by, we encounter people along our way. Some pass by us, while other we pass by some of them.

Step 3: One sensory detail

These days, I have my laptop playing various educational talks about reading and people who have been able to achieve their own success in their lives. Voices of various people would be playing in the background as I am reading, or solving IB and the voices of these people give me comforting motivation to work my assignment for Teach-Now for the week, or anything else I might have for the week. Some of them are full of self-conviction and sense of motivation in their maneuver of voice, and others provide conviction that are comforting and contagious, bringing about sense of energy and passion in my own life as well.

Step 4: Unconscious Writing

These days, I am engaged in self-learning as I am spending time to develop myself. And I have been able to encounter many self-learners and you tubers online who have been reading, writing and developing their contents to produce it online in an online platform. I have been listening to these videos, and reading about these people from time to time while tutoring students from international schools here in Myanmar, and now that schools have closed and switched to online classes, I have had many of the private tutoring cancelled as well and have been spending time preparing IB English exams, reading, and reading about other scholars in the field of education and how they have come to develop their own individual contents on education in their respective fields. And finding books and online videos about their expertise, and their process of developing and making expertise have been powerful tools that have enlarged and transformed my thinking in many ways.

Step 5: Writing about one’s own day

It was about a week ago, when I spent time in the morning reading Millionaire’s Messenger, blogging about some of the insights I had about the book on my Educontents blog. After which, I went to tutor a student in Crystal and the student needed help with atomic number and mass for the day, and so we had a short lecture about periodic table and chemistry for the day. After tutoring, my parents and I went to get acupuncture from a family friend and we were able to talk shortly before going out for dinner for dad’s birthday for the day. We were able to enjoy Thai Food from Nara and we were happy to celebrate his birthday. We decided by the end of the day that I will continue braces here in Myanmar, as flights have been cancelled by the spread of coronavirus worldwide and hence we had to communicate with the dentist in Korea about how we were to communicate with the local dentist about continuation of the dentistry process.

Step 6: Memo about a book (+Your Thoughts)

Leadership: In Turbulent Times

I was able to encounter this book through a book review that the people in internet platform, Changeground were reviewing. And I was able to get this book from kyobobooks and I found the beginning of the book to be essentially absorbing. Lincoln, while growing up, found every way to get access to the books around his neighborhood. Sometimes he would walk miles to walk to the nearby library where he could get access to the books, and there were times when his dad had given him great scolding for reading books and not working in the farm. Despite these challenges, he had immersed himself into reading which became a great source for the skillful organization and leadership he executed and showed in his political career, leading the whole country of US and also freeing the country from slavery. Bill Gates, Edison and many other leaders and trailblazers of their fields have read massive amount of books, and have been avid readers, as they have found massive amount of knowledge, skill and wisdom from the books they have immersed themselves in.

Step 7: (Collecting) Writing about a moving/striking line

“So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.”
― F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby

Though we think we are moving ahead in time, and we are always moving into the future, we underestimate the significance of our past, how influential our past is of the making of the present. We may be in many ways influenced by our past, or perhaps even moving into the past at times as is suggested by many authors in various poems. Gatsby himself has been greatly influenced by his past, his dreams and aspirations influenced by Daisy and his relationship with Daisy – the dream depicted in the form of green light at the end of the book as well. Hence, his ambitious dreams was not independent on its own, but influenced and challenged into creation by his encounters and interactions with Daisy and his desires to impress and get hold of her.

Step 8: Poem Analysis

‘Out, Out—’

BY ROBERT FROSTThe buzz saw snarled and rattled in the yard
And made dust and dropped stove-length sticks of wood,
Sweet-scented stuff when the breeze drew across it.
And from there those that lifted eyes could count
Five mountain ranges one behind the other
Under the sunset far into Vermont.
And the saw snarled and rattled, snarled and rattled,
As it ran light, or had to bear a load.
And nothing happened: day was all but done.
Call it a day, I wish they might have said
To please the boy by giving him the half hour
That a boy counts so much when saved from work.
His sister stood beside him in her apron
To tell them ‘Supper.’ At the word, the saw,
As if to prove saws knew what supper meant,
Leaped out at the boy’s hand, or seemed to leap—
He must have given the hand. However it was,
Neither refused the meeting. But the hand!
The boy’s first outcry was a rueful laugh,
As he swung toward them holding up the hand
Half in appeal, but half as if to keep
The life from spilling. Then the boy saw all—
Since he was old enough to know, big boy
Doing a man’s work, though a child at heart—
He saw all spoiled. ‘Don’t let him cut my hand off—
The doctor, when he comes. Don’t let him, sister!’
So. But the hand was gone already.
The doctor put him in the dark of ether.
He lay and puffed his lips out with his breath.
And then—the watcher at his pulse took fright.
No one believed. They listened at his heart.
Little—less—nothing!—and that ended it.
No more to build on there. And they, since they
Were not the one dead, turned to their affairs.

Out, Out is a poem by Robert Frost with historical, religious and literary allusion to it. The title, Out Out has been inspired by the line in Macbeth where the blowing out candle is portrayed as a metaphor of life going out. Hence is portrayed the ephemeral nature of life. Also, there is the religious allusion of the last supper, suggesting the irony of the sister calling out for supper would have been in retrospect the last supper the boy would have had. And lastly, but most importantly, the poem is a historical allusion to World War II where many of the young men of United States had to enlist in the army while grandeur and honor of fighting in the war were upheld as virtuous and courageous values among young men. The tragedy of war in the deaths of many young men, and the reality of adults turning their heads away from the scene would have been central themes that Frost would have wanted to portray in Out, Out.

TEACH-NOW Module 4 Unit 6 Activity 2

  1. Write a reflection on how you would build a positive classroom climate. Specifically, think and write about:
As I reflect about teachers who have had great impacts in my life while reflecting through the assignments we have had for the module, I have to agree with Rita Pierson who argues in the ted talk that every student needs a champion and students learn from teachers who they like. Setting high expectations for them, and trusting them that they can make them, and also believing in them and acknowledging, complimenting, and rewarding them for accomplishments and achievements they make at school will be fundamental to the success of students in meeting their highest potential. Though would be a big challenge in itself, communicating with the parents, and complimenting and acknowledging the students’ strengths during Open Houses and acknowledging their performance and strengths will be essential to boosting self-esteem of students and having them enjoy and love learning and more attentive to classroom activities. Having students be clear about the expectations, norms, and procedures of classroom ahead of time, and values and beliefs that are championed as a class in building positive classroom culture would be essential to be discussed, set up and modeled by the teacher for the class to follow. Transitions between activities would also have to be aptly placed and executed in order to continue the attention of the students throughout the block without losing their full focus throughout the given time period. The co-planning exercises were actually those activities that I found to be most helpful. I have learned most when working on assignments with my fellow teachers, learned from their experiences and and expertise, and also was able to take on some of the expertise, insights, and energy that they have in interacting with their students. While working on the behavior management plans, I could closely observe the parent-student relationship and how closely the relationship could be linked to students’ behaviors. And also the video observations and annotations were really helpful in terms of observing various practicing teachers with varying skill sets and the kinds of activities and strategies that they employ in executing a class for the time they are given to lead for the material they have for the given class. These in-class observations and insights from the cohort were especially helpful for me as someone who will be starting working at the school as a secondary English teacher afresh starting June in next few months.

TEACH-NOW Module 4 Unit 6 Activity 1

Template for Behavior Management Plan

Date:  April 24 2020____________________ Duration of Intervention:___3 months_____________

Student: _Jason_________________   Class/Grade: __2nd grade_________________

Goals:

1.  Jason will focus on his work while sitting still and paying attention to the teacher following instructions.
2. Jason will be solving any conflicts with other children in a nonaggressive manner.
3. Jason will wait for his turn while putting up his hand, and will not disrupt or get into physical conflicts with other students while they are presenting in class.

Target Replacement Behaviors:

1. Ask for help from the teacher if there are any problems understanding the material.
2. Ask for help from the teacher if there are any conflicts with other students.
3. Go to corner of the room if feeling angry or needing to clam down.
4.  Or go the nurse’s office if feeling angry and out of control.
5. Go to a corner of the room to draw or write something if feeling out of control.

Student Feedback:

1.  Jason will receive stickers when he meets his goals.
2.  If Jason receives three stickers, he would be able to get a free block where he would be able to work on his favorite activities along with snacks to enjoy during the free block.
3. Jason will watch documentaries and movies that would be relevant to behavioral corrections and adjustments.
4.  If Jason meets his goals for the week, Jason will be taking home letter with compliments about him to take home for his parents to see.
5. Jason will receive special gifts from the teacher if he behaves well for the entirety of the quarter at school.

Family Communication:

1.  Daily reports and letters will be sent in Jason’s school folder.
2.  Weekly summary of Jason’s behavior will be emailed to he family.
3. The letters sent to Jason’s family will include how often he often he engaged in target replacement behaviors, whether he met his goals, and his performance on the sticker system.
4. Weekly summary will include week’s progress in comparison to prior weeks.

Follow Through:

1. Cathy, Jason’s mother had agreed to take on the parenting program to help her encourage increased maturity, responsibility and independence in Jason at home.
2.  Partnership with Jason’s teacher was set up with the mother to be notified about his behaviors at school. He could then intervene to help develop those skills Jason requires and assist with the transfer of these skills to the school setting.
3. Cathy as well Jason’s teacher was encouraged to focus on the positive behaviors and to reinforce and encourage these behaviors.
4. A meting with parents, teachers, and parenting program manager will be convened in four weeks to review progress and adjust behavior plan if necessary.

The family has indicated they are working with a therapist on self-regulation
and behavior management at home. Therapy is focusing on helping CW
recognize feelings and select appropriate responses. The therapist will
consult and work with CW’s instructors to help maintain a consistent
management plan and interventions.
Bi-weekly emails with CW’s therapist will occur to review CW’s progress and
make necessary adjustments to his behavior plan.
A meeting with parents, teachers, and therapists will be convened in four
weeks to review progress and adjust the behavior plan if necessary.
When CW reaches his goals, a method for phase out will be determined
based on the time he took to learn the behaviors and his dependency on each
particular feedback technique.
Child Behavior Case Study

parenting program to help Jason’s mother encourage increased maturity, responsibility and independence in Jason at home. We also helped her set up a partnership with Jason’s teacher so that mother was aware, on a daily basis, of how he was behaving at school. She could then intervene to help him practice more appropriate behavior skills at home and assist with the transfer of these skills to the school setting.
Cathy was also encouraged to focus on the positive behaviors he exhibited and to reinforce and encourage these, as was his teacher. We also developed a plan to help the school address and encourage more appropriate behaviors.
Our evidence based intervention strategies provided the support and structure Jason needed to improve his behavioral skills. He is now doing much better and his classroom behaviors have improved considerably. His mother is no longer the worried, stressed mom she once was.

Inside Bill’s Brain: Decoding Bill Gates (Netflix)

  • that he would spend weeks in the cabin with his notepad and twenty or so books in the tote bag and spend that time to read, reflect, synthesize his ideas
  • spent time during youth reading most of the times
  • his mom wanted to have him engage in more social activities according to his own sisters
  • Melinda and Gates have been partners and they could talk for hours with one another
  • Gates developed a system where the feces produced could be put into a power plant that would be transformed into electricity and drinkable water and hence would be self-sustainable and able to run itself just with the waste products (to be ran in various developing countries including India: Melinda and Gates Foundation): showcased in press in a conference in China
  • accused of being a monopoly, sued by the American government –> reasons for pursuing philanthropic mission?

Module 4 Unit 3 Activity 1

  1. Transitions: Plan your transitions with a step-by-step process in the table below, and teach students transitions within the first weeks of school. Review and practice these transitions with students after extended breaks, midyear, and anytime you add a new student to your class. Include specific instructions you would use with students with special needs and English language learners.
Transitions
Situation Steps
Beginning  Transition
Start off with a reading quiz on the material that they had for homework for the day. This would have them get started with full energy and attention, and also remember material that they have read at home for school from the day before.
Ending TransitionSpend the last 5 minutes having students answer the exit ticket questions that they have to complete before exiting the room. The questions would be written on the board or shown via projected screen and students would have to reflect the material that they had learned for the day and synthesize, and use critical thinking skills to reflect on the material.
Transition between activitiesMake sure instructions are clear about the next activity and how much time they would have to complete them. Reflect on the previous activity before giving it a closure. Also if activities require movement within classroom or rearrangement into groups, then give instructions for these changes and give time for resettlement to prepare for next activity.
Special needsFor students with special needs and ELL students as well, double check individually if they seem to have any questions or have understood the instructions.

Teach-Now Module 4: Unit 4: Activity 2

  1. Responding to Traumatic Stress: Create a data gathering exercise to understand students’ backgrounds and identify if any of them have experienced traumatic stress. Tip: Previous teachers are sometimes a good source of information. Complete the chart below with possible strategies that you would use for specific types of trauma.
Response to Traumatic Stress
Trauma SymptomsResponse Strategies
Depression and Anxiety In the case of many North Korean refugee schools ran in South Korea, there are many strategies such as many forms of arts being employed in order to trigger interest and boost self-esteem of North Korean refugees who have faced traumatic events. For instance, they have special choirs where they form choirs as after school activities which will practice for entire semester to prepare for the end of the semester concerts that they would perform for the people in the city. These events have been specially sponsored and supported by the South Korean government as modes of boosting the morale and self-esteem of these North Korean students and also to increase their chances of quick assimilation into the South Korean society. Other modes like visual arts and opening end of the semester exhibitions or martial arts and holding relevant performances could be other therapeutic modes that would boost their morale and self-esteem and quicken their assimilation into the South Korean society.
Lack of participation or work in school; apathy/low interestThe schools could work to hire teachers of diverse backgrounds and interests who could understand better some of the traumatic events or issues pertaining to identity and cultural assimilation that these students are facing while adapting to the South Korean society. Also, these teachers should be priorly educated about the differences between North Korean education system majorly led and designed by the North Korean Kim Il Sung regime, and hence understand the potential challenges that these North Korean refugees are facing while transitioning into the South Korean education system provided by the South Korean government. Also, school counselors and psychologists employed should be those who are able to cater to the specific needs of these North Korean refugees who have went through traumatic experiences in their lives.
Academic challengesAs mentioned, these students who have been taught strictly with the principles of the North Korean government and their propaganda might find transitioning into the South Korean education system quite difficult, hence extra academic help and support might be necessary and extra hours of tutoring might be needed and helpful if the school were to hold after school after school programs to provide extra support and guidance for students struggling to complete their assignments or understand class material during school hours.
