- Communicating With Parents: Use the box below to draft your communication goals for each time you meet with students families in the academic year. Also, describe a tool or tools that you would use to communicate regularly with families about students’ progress, achievements, or behaviors?

| Goals for Back to School Meeting: I would be working as a Secondary English teacher starting June at a school called ILBC in Myanmar and I would like to send an introduction letter to the parents during the first week of classes if it is in custom with the tradition with the school so that they get to know who would be teaching their students English for the year. I would like to introduce to them a little bit of my background and my reasons for choosing teaching as a vocation, and would also like to get to know them better through the interactions I will have with them after school or during parent teacher conferences. | |
| Goals for first parent conference or PTM (parent-teacher meeting): I would like to get to discuss students’ progress and strengths with the parents on the first parents teacher meeting. I would like to let them know the class expectations and goals and what we pursue to aim for the growth and progress of the student, and let them know that they can trust the teaching staff for the learning and betterment of students’ intellectual abilities while attending the school. | |
| Goals for second parent conference: I would especially like to highlight the type of progress that the student has made over the semester, highlighting some of their major achievements or contributions made in class through various means including group projects, class discussions, assessments, and more. Parents would be informed of the various ways in which the student has contributed to class performance and had shown great progress in various subjects and topics over the course of the semester. | |
| Goals for…ELL students: If there are parents wishing to have extra support or guidance for ELL students, I would provide with them with the extra support materials I have such as the vocabulary handbook and grammar books that they could be using for further practice. I would also provide several video tutorials or interactive videos they could be watching online in order to better their English over the course of the year, as would be needed for ELL students who might require extra support and guidance. | |
| Tools for Regular Communication: What tools will you use to ensure that you regularly communicate students’ progress, achievements, and behaviors to families? First of all, report cards would provide the most basic level of communication that we need with the parents in order to provide them with a basic sense of how they are doing at school. Also, hopefully, the school will have a comments section where we are able to put our own comments on the students’ progress and achievements for the quarter or semester, in addition to the number or letter they have received for that time period. I would also like to share students’ progress, achievements, behaviors and any type of relevant information during parent teacher conferences in order to better teacher-parent communication. And if necessary, I will send out letters via emails if there are other more urgent issues I have to address prior to the conference and cc school administrators if applicable and relevant. In cases of emergency, I might have to consult with the school administrators to invite parents for a group conference or meeting. Of course, the exams, homework, textbooks, assignments, and worksheets would be available as resources for parents to look over with their students if there are applicable information they would like to learn more of. | |
| Notes for Communicating with Diverse Parents (special needs, linguistic, socio-economic, academic, or any other type of diversity): Showing them how we are welcoming of parents, families and students of all backgrounds. Having the school administration and staff be supportive of various groups of backgrounds. And also having diverse group of staff and teachers who can communicate with teachers from various backgrounds. |
